An American-born citizen, Emery was raised as a Shiite Muslim in the Detroit area, which has the largest Arab population outside of the Middle East. He joined the Marine Corps after high school graduation. Emery spent 3 years in the Corps and was honorably discharged as a Sergeant.
After the Marine Corps, Emery joined the Detroit Police Department. During a Special Response Team (SRT) call, his partner was killed by a barricaded gunman, and a lieutenant on the scene was also killed. Emery had to shoot and kill the gunman. Shortly afterwards, he retired from the police department.
Emery and his wife now have 3 grown children. He converted from Islam and received Christ as his Savior while on the police force.
